Point Cook was named after Lieutenant John Murray Cooke of HMS Rattlesnake, which visited Port Phillip Bay in 1837.

Point Cook located in the western of Melbourne, 29 km west of Melbourne.

Its local government area is the City of Wyndham. At the 2011 Census, Point Cook had a population of 32,413.
